Our God, will You guide our thoughts.. Reveal to our hearts what You tell our minds. Wake in us faith, and through faith expectation of life that is glorious beyond understanding.

But keep our feet on the ground. Arm us with truth and realism about the life that precedes the heavenly as we trace the footsteps of those who've gone before us. This we ask in the Name of Him Who rules for ever from heaven! He Who stumbled on a path of heartache and pain under a cross, heavy to bear ..for us, who are privileged to share in Your suffering until suffering will be no more..

Until You come to take us to heaven, Lord, heaven WILL prevail within us – for heaven could only be were You are, and thank You Lord: You are - forever - in us..!

This week we take a look at the lives of children of God who have gone before us, believers who have reached their eternal destiny. This will help us as we try and estimate where the parameters lie within which our expectations of the Christian life may realistically take shape..

The parable about Lazarus and the rich man teaches the idea that bad things come to bad people and good things happen to those who are good certainly is true, especially once their lives on earth is THROUGH! (see Psalm 73) In the meanwhile bad things happen to good people to develop character, to test and strengthen our relationship with God, to help us prioritize and define the purpose of our lives. (NIV James1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.") The quote concerning Lazarus's lifetime during which he received bad things prepares us with the knowledge that hard times WILL come over us. It raises realistic expectations. After all: too many sunshine days makes a desert! - In life it is the heavy winds that cause us to develop a strong root system!

The story of Lazarus makes me feel quite uncomfortable. What do you believe to be the meaning of Lazarus's suffering and how do you make SENSE of Lazarus's life as it is described to us?

Again we can quote NIV James1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." Furthermore the suffering of Lazarus reminds of the saying: A person is like a tea bag - his true worth is proved when he gets into hot water." Job's obedience to God proved to be of great value when in spite of losing everything he was grateful for - he kept on seeking, worshiping and obeying God! The ultimate wealth; the inner wealth of Lazarus opposed to the ultimate poverty; the inner poverty of the 'rich man' came to light when they both died and had to leave the earthly behind. Lazarus's circumstances made him into a demonstration model put to the test in the eyes of all who daily passed him by.

Is it even vaguely implied that rich people go to heaven, while poor people go to hell? Since Lazarus is described in heaven with Abraham, who truly was a wealthy man when it comes to earthly riches let's move on to his life story now.

Galatians 3:6-9 NIV

Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. .. compare John 8:39-47 NIV

Seeing that by faith we are children of Abraham, the father of all who believe - certainly what happened in his life should impact on our expectations. Surely eternal life in heaven with God must be the greatest blessing Abraham or any one of us could ever receive.

15.1. Abraham remained childless for eighty-six years! His son Isaac was born when he was a hundred years old. 15.2. Later he had to send his firstborn son, Ishmael away. 15.3. Abraham had to leave his country and his people: ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’ 15.4. God gave Abraham no inheritance in Canaan, the promised land, not even a foot of ground. 15.5. Abraham received this terrible news: ‘Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 15.6. God demanded Abraham's son, Isaac be sacrificed as a burnt offering. Abraham had to live with this devastating idea for several days during which he had to plan the killing and burning of his son.

About a year ago your nephew was trapped on the twelfth floor of a burning building. It was a frightening experience. He nearly died. He was surrounded by flames and panicking - when he saw a figure coming toward him through the thick smoke and flames. "Could it be an angel?" he thought to himself as he stood there in shock, struggling to breathe as he was suffering from severe smoke inhalation. But his saviour turned out to be a fireman who picked him up and carried him off just as he lost consciousness. Having been rescued only minutes before the building collapsed, he regained consciousness during CPR. Later, in hospital he had a chance to thank the fireman. Now he knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life: He joined the other recruits to be trained as a fire fighter.

He had sound very enthusiastic the last time you spoke to him over the phone, but now only one week into his training he sent you a message in which he tells of his discouragement. Training to be a fireman is not at all going the way he expected.

His saviour turns out to be a demanding MONSTER as a trainer who has no compassion with the adapting new recruits. He demands absolute fitness, routine, discipline and hardly allows them any leisure time.

He screams at them, hurries them along when they can't move any faster and penalizes them with back breaking exercises.

Your nephew feels physically and emotionally near breaking point. "I can hardly even recognize the man who saved me underneath that brute exterior! He seems to be a sadist who have saved me - just to make me struggle and long for death again," your nephew complains..

Dear Nephew, I am proud of your choice to become a fire fighter after experiencing first hand how essential the fire service is. I feel great compassion for your suffering and I am glad that you felt the freedom to share your feelings with me. Please keep in mind that the day your trainer walked into that burning building as a fireman to rescue you - he had to have the following:

a) Physical strength and absolute fitness (developed in training and maintained through severe exercise)

b) He had to be sure exactly how far he could push his own limits physically, mentally and emotionally without unnecessarily and ruthlessly endangering the life of his wife's husband, his parents' son, his children's father, the lives of his colleagues and the victims who needed to be rescued. Getting to know himself and improve on the characteristics he lacks had to start during his training under a trainer who would push him to a point where his weaknesses was exposed.

c) He had to be able to predict with one hundred percent accuracy how his colleagues would react in a stressful situation - in order to rely on them and entrust his life to their capability. Indeed, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link - and every link in the human chain of which the fire force consists had to be put through severe testing and strengthened where needed.

d) He had to be absolutely sure what he was doing, handling equipment with confidence in stressful situations and harsh conditions.

e) Perfection through tireless practice. He had no room for mistakes for mistakes would be payed for in human lives.

Keeping all this in mind, in the midst of great compassion for your suffering I wish for the fireman who saved your precious life to be a brutal trainer who will push you to breaking point: a point where your weaknesses are exposed - in order to be improved upon so you may truly become a strong and worthy link in the human chain of which our fire force consists and which we are proud of. - This way he will have saved your life TWICE!

Some time ago a friend of yours came to know the Lord Jesus as her personal Saviour. It was a total life changing experience at a time when her life was a mess and she could see no way out.

The first time you saw her since, she was radiant. She was smiling. Her life was filled with joy.

You immediately noticed the change..

She couldn't stop talking about how wonderful the presence, the love, the grace and forgiveness of her Saviour is.

He came to be the light in her darkness, the calmness in her storm, the Answer to all her problems.

Not only had she joined the army of believers, she seemed to have become the cheerleader, energetically cheering her fellow believers along; unable to understand why not every one of them always seemed radiant, having been touched by the Lord!

Then, yesterday when you spoke to her over the phone, she seemed to have quieted down.

Her little girl died in a car accident six months ago, she explained. She was driving. Her face is badly scarred. She limps. The back injury she sustained is getting worse, some days the pain is unbearable. On top of it all her husband had lost his job and spent the past five months seeking employment - without any success! Every door seems to close in his face. Meanwhile the bills are adding up!! She can't understand it. Everything was going so well..

"Why did all this had to happen?" she wonders. "Does her Saviour still love her? Is God letting her down?"

She searched her life to try and find out if she had done something wrong.

She wakes up in pain at night and wonder: Does she really know this God in whom she put her trust? Do we really serve a loving, caring, almighty God who in all things works for the good of those who love him?

She feels like she cannot carry on..

Dear Friend, I am so happy that you had become a faithful witness for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ after experiencing first hand how wonderful it is to be saved from degeneration and condemnation and to receive the gift of eternal life.

I know that you long for others to get to know our Saviour as you were so privileged to. I know that you would like for all to see Him in you - and get saved themselves! You would love to be an advertisement for the joy that comes from truly knowing God in your heart of hearts!

Yet, advertisements are only promises that are yet to deliver. Mostly based on small successes blown out of proportion to make huge impressions.

What our Saviour needs most to save others through our
